TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team


My mom got me started on a new charity sewing project. No, I'm not abandoning Quilts Beyond Borders - far from it! I am adding in a new one - TQPM Small Kennel Quilts.  The TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team is a volunteer organization that is available when disasters strike. It is a way to join a larger effort to help our animal friends in times of need by doing what we love. They supply kennel quilts to shelters in times of need.

With the recent Carlton Complex fires here in the Methow Valley in Washington State, over 300 homes were lost in the firestorm. Families, pets and livestock were displaced. My community has been severely impacted and was the impetus for me to give back to those in need.

These are small little quilts that don't take much material or time to make. I have been able to use scraps from my QBB quilts and one I made for my son.

Our local quilt shop is getting in on the action, too. At our Open Sew this coming Tuesday, we are going to crank out some more.

These are the first six kennel quilts I have completed. They have already been delivered to the shelter in Okanogan.

    Sally you are such a sweetie pie . . . with a heart of pure gold. I was so sorry to hear about the fires up your way and all the homes that were burned. I do believe that you live in just about the prettiest area in our lovely state.

    Sally, a truly loving work from the heart for your community. As your neighbors find their pets, or find a place for their pets to lay their heads, they will appreciate your efforts and the efforts of the quilters in your community.

A New Dust Cover For My Handi Quilter Machine

I have been using a sheet as a dust cover on my Handi Quilter HQ16 longarm machine. Not pretty, but it did the job. The other day I was shopping at my local quilt store and she had a bolt of fabric that called to me and said, "Hey! I would make a great cover for your longarm machine." The fabric pattern is called Laugh Love Quilt by Amy Hamberlin for Henry Glass Fabrics. I knew there was a free download pattern on the Handi Quilt website so I checked to see how much yardage I would need before leaving the store. The pattern is for their Avante 18 (they also include info for the Fusion 24). They also include a pattern size if your machine has the Prostitcher--mine does not. The HQ instructions are really brief and not very informative. There are not many pictures of completed covers to give an idea on what the finished product is like. No Sew Fringe Vest

Hey! Wait a minute! Isn't this blog about sewing? Why yes it is. But sometimes "projects" happen where sewing isn't needed. But it sure helps to have sewing and quilting tools. I need a costume for a 60's themed BBQ (where social distancing will be practiced). I looked for ideas online and saw where I could purchase a costume for $$. Why would I do that if I could make my own? I decided I needed a fringed vest as part of my outfit. Hmmmm...yeah, I could make one out of my fabric stash, but that is mostly cottons and I felt not suitable for what I was thinking. I ended up purchasing a men's black sleeveless t-shirt from Wally World for under $5. Purchased Shirt I laid out the t-shirt on my cutting table, face up, and smoothed out the wrinkles as best I could. I took a strip of 1" blue masking tape and placed it on the shirt just below the arm holes. This would be my stopping line when cutting the fringe. Using my 24" ruler and rotary cutte...

New Templates & A Handy Dandy Tool

Like many people across the country, we are still sewing masks at our house. Honestly, I will be glad to take a break from this. This weekend's project was finishing up 30 fitted masks to take to co-workers and their families. Our company provided 5 masks to each employee when we started operations back up earlier this month. They are the pleated medical style and they were made by our upholstery team (yay, team!). I prefer the fitted style myself so I have been using my own when necessary. I received many compliments on it and a few people asked for one. How can I say no? The task was made much easier by new acrylic mask templates I ordered and received last week. I purchased them from Shop Stitch Buzz on Etsy. I really liked that templates were very similar in size to the homemade cardboard ones I was using.
